Apologies, as this update comes a little behind schedule. We had to move pretty fast to get our last ride in before we ventured back to Pennsylvania. Our last day at camp involved a three hour ride, including part of a group ride with about 70 riders ranging from Pro men and women to us little guys. The tempo got pretty intense but everyone here wanted to see how hard they could drive the pace. After the ride, we packed up our gear and stopped by for a lunch along the coast with Rob and Lori.
Throughout the week, we consumed approximately 100 packs of Pop Tarts, 2 very large pasta meals, 4 dozen bagels with cream cheese, 4 bunches of bananas, 2 bags of oranges, almost a box of energy gel per rider, a few cans of Hammer Heed and PowerBar mix, a few boxes of cereal, almost 3 gallons of juice, a few gallons of milk, a dozen burgers, plus a meal out to eat each day (salad bars, white pizzas, huge plates of pastas, tuna melts) and all of the food picked up at stops during rides. Total calories expended for the week has to be well over 150,000.
In closing our Florida adventure, we would sincerely like to send a big THANK YOU to Rob and Lori for hosting us this week. We had a blast with you both, and riders take warning: Rob is a ridiculous machine on the bike who knows his stuff. We promise not to call you Grandpa ever again.
Today was beautiful. It was everything we wanted. Sunny, 70-80 degrees, not very windy, and dry. The team rode to West Palm Beach and got just under 7 hours in on the bike. West Palm Beach is certainly different from anything in Pennsylvania, which was a cool thing to experience. Very nice. Afterwards, we came back and made a huge pasta and grilled chicken meal, which didn’t last very long. We have so many pictures to share… here are more from today.
Talk about rough. The day started out sweet, 70 degrees and sunny, and about an hour into it, the sky fell hard. Rain for hours on end, but again, a lot of time in on the bike, more time together, and so forth. After the ride, everyone got cleaned up and headed out for dinner again. It is starting to feel pretty normal seeing each other all of the time. Crusin’ in Rob’s Suburban, yelling out the window in unison to our friendly neighbor DB as we drive by, watching hilarious movies after hard days and eating. In fact, we even made it to the grocery store together to get more, ok, a lot more food.
New pictures from days three and four to come tomorrow. Maybe some will include Binkley in them, since he is the one taking most of the team pics so far. Actually, the first video from about 15 minutes into our arrival is available below. We were so stoked to get here and ride together in the 80 degree weather, Jordo threw on a headlight, talked Rob into riding, and all seven of us went burning around the neighborhood at like 30 mph. We probably scared the heck out of the neighbors in our board shorts and cycling shoes; it was great! But for now, we’re going to bed. Enjoy the clip!
Well, the team had another very windy ride today. Then it rained. Even so, the weather isn’t 15 degrees and snowing, so no one cared all that much. Plus, it gave the group an excuse to stop for coffee and bagels. Everyone ended up getting around 6 hours in on the bike, which is adding to some impressive totals for this week. Today the ride went through Jupiter, a sweet town along the coast just north of West Palm Beach. The scenery there was in fact unbelievable, which is probably why Tiger Woods moved in. Riding there was such an experience for us, and was quite a change from the vacant corn fields and of home. Eat, sleep, and ride is the routine right now, and tomorrow is another big day. There are a lot of photos and a few videos to add, but for now, check these out.
1100. That’s the number of miles we traveled on New Years Eve to get to Florida for a week long training camp (these guys are Cat 3/4? You know it). Was it worth the effort? Absolutely! Wednesday was our first real day out on the bike, and six of us rode five hours with Rob. The first two hours were spent turning the pedals nonstop into a grueling headwind, but the return trip back was so sweet. The tailwind gave us a chance to scope out the palm trees and gorgeous scenery immediately along the coast, while getting quality, consistent training in. We’re having a total blast together turning heads, enjoying the camaraderie and team training opportunities… not to mention the weather! More updates and pictures to come.
