2008 Kirkwood Road Race Results, Photos, Update

Today was the 2008 Kirkwood Road Race, and it was an excellent day for our team! In the Category 4 race, and our relatively small team had a very strong showing in the 90-rider field:

            2nd- Amos Glick

            6th-Jordan Binkley

            8th-Manny Caliz

            15th-Noah Mabry

Everyone worked very well together and kept communication open during the race. At the finish line, Amos passed half a dozen riders in a very strong surge for the line. The way he accelerated was really impressive, and if he had ten more feet, he would have had first for sure. After the Category 4 race, Amos jumped in the Category 3/4 race with brother Jon, where they both had strong field finishes. On a solo effort, Jon almost bridged a big gap between the field and a breakaway of four riders (that held to the finish), and our victorious Amos led the chase! Incredible! Bret Levy of our sponsor LEA also raced again today to see if he could improve on his 10^th place finish from Strasburg. Full results will be posted when they are made available.

In other news, Kerry Werner had a consecutive win in his second ever road race! He also entered the Category 4/5 race where he had a strong showing, as well. In the past two weeks, Kerry has (unofficially) been added to our roster, bringing our count to eight! Kerry will be the only junior (under 18) rider on our team, and his personality, mountain bike experience and very notable strength brings a lot to our team!

Strasburg Road Race

The Strasburg Road Race was held this past Saturday, and marked the beginning of the 2008 race season. Manny, Amos, Noah, and Jordan Binkley took part in the event, with 90 riders in the Cat 4 field. Everyone rode together the entire race and looked comfortable, but on the final lap things didn’t work out as planned. Manny and Amos led the field for a while, but got pulled back in by the field. Almost everyone rolled across the line in the top 20 or so.

Also, congratulations to Kerry Werner who won the Category 5 Road Race! Kerry rides for the Shirk’s Mountain Bike team, and is working his way into the road world. For two years in a row, someone wearing a Shrik’s jersey has won the Cat 5 road race (last year it was Manny)! Full Strasburg race results will be posted when made available. The 2008 Race Season Begins!

As March arrives, so do the races. This coming weekend, Saturday, March 15, is the first race in Pennsylvaia, Strasburg Road Race! And in final preparation for the season, Jon, Amos, Noah, and Manny traveled to Baltimore for lab testing. Areas examined include maximum heart rate, VO2 max, lactate threshold power output, and power:weight ratios, among many. Manny also traveled to New Jersey last week for his first race of the season (in a downpour, too) where he finished 7th in the field! Strasburg will be a big day for our team, so come out and support us! Our races start around 11:30 AM this Saturday, and we hope to see you there!
